Scent of Mayhem

(1965)
A novel by

Hidden in a back street of the old city, Stratton watches the man in the Crombie overcoat sag forward, the murderer's left hand clamped over the victim's mouth and a knife driven in to the hilt in his back.

Moments later, Stratton himself is knocked unconscious ...

Brussels at the height of the Cold War. Europe's crossroads of espionage.

Here, Mark Stratton of Air Security has been sent to work with an Anglo-American Intelligence unit, cloaked under the guise of an import-export trading house.

His mission is to prevent a renegade aviation engineer from being killed or kidnapped by foreign agents and to persuade or compel him to come to Britain.

Failing that - "eliminate him", if necessary.

Britain however is not unique with these plans and Stratton soon finds himself both the hunter and the hunted in a city where no one seems to be who they claim they are.

From the seediest of hotels to the grandest of restaurants, countryside retreats and antique bookshops, Stratton races around the hub of Europe in a frantic quest to uncover his enemies' identities and motives.

And with different threats coming at him from every angle, suddenly the true identity of the man Stratton and his colleagues have been assigned to protect is revealed in a manner which could bring them to disaster.

In this tangled web of lies and infiltration, political chicanery is spiced with amorous intrigue to create a fast-paced tale of mystery and murder.

Richard Townshend Bickers volunteered for the R.A.F. at the outbreak of World War II and served, with a Permanent Commission, for eighteen. His experience has greatly shaped his writing career, during the course of which he has written more books about the R.A.F. and its predecessor, the R.F.C., than any other author, living or dead. Born in India and educated in England, he has travelled the world and lived in many different countries. He speaks and writes nine European and four oriental languages, and does his own research by interview and correspondence and in foreign archives. In addition to his novels, he has also written articles, short stories, and radio plays.
