Baltimore, 1834.
Fleur Trevelyan, a wealthy Virginia widow, has been brutally beaten to death, and the evidence points to her suitor, struggling writer Jack Redburn. A bloody hammer is found in Jack’s lodgings. His clothes are soaked in blood. The police are certain they have their killer.
But Jack is innocent.
On the run, Jack turns to the only person who can help him: Edgar Allan Poe, a young poet whose life Jack saved in a tavern brawl.
Poe agrees to help Jack find Fleur’s real killer. He is convinced that two men armed with reason and determination can accomplish what the police cannot do with fists and clubs.
As they attempt to save Jack from the gallows, Jack and Poe find themselves hunted not only by the police, but by Fleur’s killer, as well. They race to solve the murder before the killer gets to them. In the process, both of their lives are transformed forever, and they uncover a plot that could change the future of the United States.
