A British spy is on holiday in the summer of 2017 when he sees something that makes him fearful. Only the shortest of messages makes it through: 'Elizabeth R.'
In a febrile political atmosphere, politicians and bureaucrats are being targeted around Europe. Is it possible that the Queen could be a target, too?
MI5 and MI6 aren't unduly worried: she's off to Balmoral, where she'll be well protected. However, a young woman with a secret is also heading that way.
So is Rozie Oshodi, the Queen's assistant private secretary, who has suffered a personal tragedy, and has been invited to rest and recuperate on the beautiful Balmoral estate.
Three women, with very different agendas. Not all of them will still be standing when the summer is over . . .
