An attempt to combat evil. A misplaced loyalty. A deadly result. A British detective police procedural with a touch of noir.

When a young man is found dead from a stab wound on a grim north London housing estate, the initial evidence points to a gang killing. The theory gains credence when DI Bentley discovers that the victim was the leader of a gang which controlled the N19 area around Archway and so could easily have been the target for a rival outfit.

But it emerges that the dead man had several other reasons to keep looking over his shoulder when he walked around his treacherous north London domain, and Bentley is quickly drawn into a vortex of connections between rival gangs, personal friendships and clandestine love affairs.

Only when the complex web of relationships has been successfully unravelled does the identity of the killer become apparent — as does the unexpected and tragic reason for the murder.

This murder mystery is a British police procedural in the mode of the old-fashioned British crime novels — a cozy detective mystery but with a touch of noir, one filled with engaging characters and plot twists to keep you guessing right to the end.
