Mavis Davis, a former probation officer and former social worker, qualifies as a private detective. She quits her job and opens her own office with plans to be a full-time private investigator. Her best friend, who is sometimes short on common sense but a whiz on a computer, Margaret Applebaum, throws in with her. The third member of their team is half-day high school worker Candy Finklestein, who is from a disadvantaged home but has brains and ambitions.

Mavis, having spent her life savings on furnishings for the office, is forced to take whatever walks in the door. In addition to serving papers and typing documents for lawyers, they let people use the copier—paying by the page—and they pretty much take care of other reasonable requests. Someday, all three hope, a well-paying client will hire them to do an important case for him or her and they'll be given credibility—or at least start earning a reputation for doing things other than office work.

One day, a blue-collar-looking man comes in with a newspaper under his arm. Does he want to copy an article? NO! Since no one else will take his case, he hires Mavis to find out who murdered one of the waitresses in his cafe, the mysterious Doris Jones. Mavis, not piqued by knowing she was the investigator of last resort, takes the case and is off and running.
