Spring has finally come to the beautiful small stately home that Amy Hammond loves. Obviously, it’s come to everywhere else in Dorset as well, but unfortunately, so has her former schoolmate Jenny Jones. She used to delight in trying to make Amy’s life a misery when they were at school, so Amy isn’t entirely surprised that she’s now trying to build a new housing estate in a lovely little village. Nor is she surprised that Jenny is adamant that it won’t cause flooding, while local conservationists are just as adamant that it is. Jenny claims to be a prominent environmentalist, but then she claimed a lot of things when they were younger.

She could quite easily have done without seeing her again, but she seems to be popping up wherever Amy is. Until, that is, she ends up in a fast-flowing river and drowns. Her husband is convinced that she was murdered, especially when someone tries to drown him too. Amy’s husband, the nothing like as retired as he wants to be former spy Brigadier Peter Cunningham, knows something is up because his old bosses are interested in her, and not only send his usual team down but assign a former soldier that he once mentored, and who doesn’t want to be assigned.

Add to that, Nathan Laughton, the Batman of the paperwork world, is changing the habits of his lifetime and Greg, who’s Swansmere’s conservationist, isn''t telling the whole truth and death coming in the spring is only the start of Amy’s problems.
