When the town librarian is an avid mystery and true-crime reader, the local law enforcement must need a book-smart assistant like her, right?

Mary, a longstanding library volunteer, adopted two cats in July to prevent them from ending up in a shelter, and that was the catalyst for librarian Rebecca Towne to rope the Friends of the Library into another one of her fur-brained ideas. August is often a slow month at the library, so Rebecca decides to host an adoption event on International Cat Day, bringing cats from area shelters directly to the residents of Newfound Lake. With the crowd she is hoping to draw, she’ll need snacks and helpers to pull it off in style.

After adopting Sooty and Smokey, Mary takes her feline companions on regular walks at the Mill Falls Park, adjacent to the Newfound River. They get lots of questions and funny looks with their harnesses and leashes on. One fateful morning, she discovers a body trapped on the rocks, held in place by the rushing water. Instead of calling the police, Mary calls Rebecca, which sets off a game of cat and mouse between the hunter and the hunted.

Will the death of a not-so-single resident raise questions amongst the tomcats in town, or can the guilty party claw their way to a purr-fect murder?
