Library Journal
This novel presents a one-sided picture of the late 19th century in the eastern and western United States. The author emphasizes the worst aspects of both sections, peopling his story with gross caricatures of everyone from robber barons and empire builders to mountain men and Indians and filling it with racial and ethnic slurs. Professor Evans of Harvard goes to Idaho territory in search of Nampuh, a giant believed to be a throwback to Neanderthal man. He finds him, is made captive by him and his band, and is trained in their lifestyle. Evans's fiancee, traveling alone to Idaho to find him, falls into the clutches of villains. Most of the writing is melodramatic and turgid. The action is bloody and brutal. Not recommended.--Sister Avila, Acad. of Holy Angels, Min neapolis
