At ten years old, Faith Powall was the oldest daughter of three siblings, living happily with her family in lower-class London.

Her father repaired carriages and her mother was a seamstress, but after a horrible accident that left her without a father, and her mother who caught a fever, Faith and her siblings are farmed out to extended family members. She had to goodbye to her dear friend, the kind Curtis Cropper, a streetwise orphan boy who worked as a mute for the local undertaker— as she headed to her aunt Tillie, to be raised in her Hertfordshire home.

Aunt Tillie turned out to be unjustly cruel, showing great preference for her own obnoxious daughters, and Faith is relocated to a maid’s station.
After surviving in her aunt’s cold supervision for six years, Faith has a glimpse of hope when she runs into Curtis, and the two of them make plans to run away together and find her siblings. But her aunt strikes first—Faith is all but sold to a leech collector, who sends her into swamps and ponds to gather the little bloodsuckers to sell them to doctors in town.

Faith has nearly run out of all hope when a chance falls into her lap to see Curtis again and possibly hunt down her long-gone siblings—will she ever escape the leech master and the underbelly of Victorian London? Or will love and hope evade her again?
