When her mother is tragically killed, ten-year-old Emma is orphaned. As she has only ever known the world of servitude for the wealthy, she begins her work life as a scullery maid at Blaylock Manor, a sprawling, picturesque house on the edge of London.

Over the years, Emma blossoms into a beautiful young woman and begins a friendship with the young master, William. As she matures, Emma begins to realize people are captivated by her beauty, and through no fault of her own, her exquisiteness is a curse, not a blessing, and comes with a terrible price.

After a terrible incident at Blaylock Manor, Emma once again finds herself alone in the world and she's sent to the workhouse. She sees no end to the bleak conditions as a seamstress; her only hope that is that her childhood love, William, will marry her one day.

At the workhouse, Emma faces a new series of challenges. While she waits for William, to her surprise, she meets a young man who has wit and charm that's not diminished by the extreme oppression of their world. Toby shows Emma there is light everywhere if she knows how to see it.

Will Toby be the one to provide her with the security and love she's always wished for, or will William wait for her and give her the life of wealth she could only dream about?
