Vera Lund photographs what other people miss. Fourteen years in medical documentation have taught her how to read a hand and a page of grant language closer than most people bother to.

When she finds two lab reports filed together on an expedition laptop, one recording a rare compound at six times any published concentration, the other showing the same sample nearly emptied two days later, she does not know yet that she has found a case. She only knows the numbers do not match, and in fourteen years she has never found a mismatch that meant nothing.

What she uncovers pulls her into two courtrooms instead of one. A pharmaceutical company suing the researcher who took his discovery somewhere it was never supposed to go. And, quieter, a patient asking whether the surgeon who promised him a restored hand meant restored, or just hoped he would never have to answer for the difference.

Both cases turn on the same question. What a promise is worth when it does not match what arrives. THE THORN follows the photographer who keeps the receipts nobody else wants to look at.
