When Dan Tallow, a drifter, wins the deeds to a farm in a card game he thinks his troubles are over. However, arriving in the Montana valley where his new home will be, his sense of well-being is shattered when he has to step in to stop a lynching. His intervention makes an enemy of Mame Rockton, the valley's big rancher. By involving in Rockton affairs, Tallow has made his first and only mistake Mame has him framed for the murder of a US marshal who arrives to investigate the spate of Rockton crimes. Now she believes she can kill tow birds with one stone. Consequently the gallows seem to be Dan Tallow's certain end. But he has a determined ally in Hymie Goldberg, the young man he saved from being lynched, and a good friends in Reb Johnson, the woman whom he hopes to marry. Will all this and his own determination enable him to win through?
