Trouble At Brodie Creek

(2007)
A novel by

Sam Hanley, the tough-as-nails marshal of Brodie Creek, has resigned to marry and follow his dream of becoming a rancher. However, on his wedding day and his final day as marshal, trouble hits town in the form of the Thad Cross gang, killers one and all. Brodie Creek has a new marshal in Dan Cockrell, but as trouble builds he crumbles. Popular opinion is that Hanley should temporarily take back his badge and save the town from inevitable disaster. But now that he's resigned, Ellie, Hanley's new wife, wants him to ignore the pleas and leave town as they planned. As it turns out, it is because of Ellie that he finally becomes involved when the Cross gang raid the bank and kidnap her. His only concern now is to rescue Ellie. To do that he has to follow Cross to Hangman's Perch, an outlaw roost that up till then has remained impregnable. But obstacles relentlessly pile up and it is always in doubt whether Hanley can win through.
