In the 17th century, the Tokugawa Shogunate sealed Japan’s borders from the world – foreigners were banned, Japanese were forbidden to travel, and trade was limited to a single artificial island, Dejima, off the coast of Nagasaki. For over two centuries, the nation remained hidden… until U.S. gunboats forced it open in 1854.
Now, in the present day, Sam Reilly and his wife Amira arrive in NikkÅ for a quiet escape. It’s their first time in Japan – and they’ve chosen to enjoy a peaceful babymoon in a land steeped in history.
