Caught in a vicious hurricane, Darius’s ship, the Wyndham, has been carried northwards towards the Caribbean, her rudder broken and her main and for’ard masts gone. Helpless to steer a course, the ship is blown into the mouth of the Amazon River where it is driven onto an island and shipwrecked. With the ship’s boats smashed to splinters, almost half the crew washed overboard and impenetrable jungle all around there is little hope of rescue or escape. However, the Wyndham was not the only ship to have been blown off course, and further along the river bank they find the half sunken remains of a small brig and from the ship’s log learn that the crew have been captured by slavers. They have been taken to Lugar de Barra, a thousand miles down the Amazon, and in an effort to save his ship, replace his lost crew and at the same time find two new masts from within the Amazon’s jungle, Darius goes after them. It is a desperate move filled with more dangers than even Darius can imagine.

Amongst the dead is Colonel Harman, Xerxes arch rival, and it doesn’t take long for questions to be asked about the suspicious nature of his death and fingers begin to be pointed at Xerxes. Wellesley, who has refused the junta’s demands to continue fighting in Spain until they guarantee to properly provision his army, decides to rest his men at Badajoz and as he no longer needs his spymaster he sends him back to England, away from his accusers. Xerxes is more than happy to return to the loving arms of his wife and hurries towards his country home in Exmouth, but when he gets there things are not at all what he was expecting.
