The canal has one entrance. The Viet Cong have been waiting at the other end of it for days.
September 1967. Chief Miller and the River Hawks are assigned to escort a South Vietnamese resupply movement through an isolated stretch of the Mekong Delta. The normal route is compromised. The alternate is a narrow canal already notorious among American crews for taking fire.
Streetwalker enters with a sister PBR and enough guns to make any exposed enemy position suicidal. That is exactly what the enemy is counting on. They let both boats penetrate deep into the canal before the trap closes. Mines. Automatic weapons. Recoilless fire. Sappers in the shallows. The sister boat is crippled. Streetwalker loses propulsion and maneuverability trying to save her.
Now the River Hawks are not patrolling the canal. They are stuck inside it.
Tex can hammer the banks, but ammunition is finite. Wrench must keep a shot-up boat running under fire. Professor has to find a way out through water that changes by the hour. Miller faces the worst command decision of his career: save Streetwalker, or stay long enough to bring the other sailors home.
