The falcon saw it first.
At Hollis Field, a remote desert airbase, Staff Sergeant Tessa Rourke flies her gyrfalcon, Brim, over the wire. Brim stops in the sky and hangs above a patch of empty ground. The sensors say there's nothing there. The sensor chief calls it heat.
At dawn the next day, the sky turns black.
A swarm of small drones pours across the perimeter. They blind the radar, smother the cameras, and shut down the base's counter-drone defenses, because the system has been told the swarm is friendly. More machines land inside the wire and sit perfectly still, waiting. On the pad sits a transport loaded with fifty-one people, most of them children, and nowhere safe for it to fly.
Then every radio goes dead. Every screen is lying. And someone inside the base is helping the enemy.
Tessa has one weapon the machines can't fool: a bird that sees what the sensors can't, and hunts what it sees. But the swarm is learning, and the thing guiding it is watching from far above. To get those children into the air, Tessa will have to send Brim somewhere she may not be able to call him back from.
Black Sky is the first novel in the Sky Shield series, a near-future military thriller of courage, betrayal, and the bond between a soldier and the falcon she trusts with her life.
Genre: Thriller
