Seven on the team. One falcon. Every one of them has a line he will not cross.

Tessa will not call her bird. She stands in the open with a bare glove and waits until he comes. Brim is not allowed to climb, and he does not try. Tavita gives back the only strike the valley will get, because there are people walking under it. Ondrik fires once. When the rifle is empty, he stands up with it anyway and shouts at the men coming up the bank. Ferrante calls the bird Kevin, and is told not to every time. Ruzic stands up on an open slope under a gun, because his team leader is down at the other end of it.

Then the truck is gone, the long-range radio is shot through, and the road below them is full of people walking out of the valley.

The team learns that the enemy's signal runs through birds on rocks, and that the man who keeps those birds keeps them better than anyone. Tessa has one way to reach him: the one thing he taught every one of them to do.
