The river into Saigon runs through a swamp built to hide men, mines, and murder.
January 1968. Streetwalker is temporarily reassigned to the Rung Sat Special Zone, a mangrove labyrinth surrounding the shipping approaches to Saigon. A recent attack has put the Long Tau route on edge, and the River Hawks are ordered to protect minesweepers working the channel.
Then Miller’s crew stops a sampan carrying detonator parts, batteries, and electrical wire. The cargo is not headed for a village. It leads into waterways barely wide enough for a PBR.
Inside the Rung Sat, maps become guesses. Tides erase channels. Mangrove roots reach for Streetwalker’s water jets. Mines wait beneath opaque water. Enemy firing positions can be ten yards away and invisible until they open fire.
The River Hawks discover a hidden Viet Cong mine-and-sabotage network preparing attacks on merchant shipping. Some of the devices are already moving. One explosive-laden boat is headed toward the main channel. Another team is closing on a vessel at anchor.
To stop them, Streetwalker must go deeper into the mangroves than a patrol boat should ever want to go — and then find a way back out before the swamp, the tide, or the enemy closes behind her.
