Ex-reb Charlie Bannack, in Maryland to rob a Union bank, is jumped on by a Yankee cavalry patrol and accused of being implicated in the Lincoln assassination plot. To gain his freedom, Charlie agrees to be a Union Secret Service agent and to help Chief Agent Lars Jackson to track down the last of the plotters, a man known only as M. The shooting trouble Charlie meets up with along the Kansas border makes the assignment every bit as hair-raising as his war service had been.
