It is a certain fact that a single family in possession of a large house must be in want of a horse.

Twenty-four-year old Emma is awoken by a panicked phone call from her friend Cecy. Cecy has left her husband and is convinced he will kill her horse in revenge. She abandons her horse in a trailer outside Emma’s London flat and then disappears, becoming uncontactable.

Emma is uncertain what to do. She drives the horse and trailer her parent’s house only to discover they are on a second honeymoon. After a suggestion from a woman in the street she drives on to a rural estate, Cummerbund Manor, which, she is told, has suitable set of stables.

Instead, she finds a dead body in an outhouse: Cecy’s husband, Leicester.

Emma claims she has nothing to do with his death but the fact she arrives at Cummerbund Manor despite having no previous connection with the place, has a ridiculous story about her friend leaving a horse on her London doorstep and her tales of strange people giving her advice before disappearing, only convinces the police that she is involved. Then they find blood on the trailer floor: Leicester’s blood.
Arrested for murder, Emma's only hope is an unlikely pair: the sharp twelve-year-old daughter of the Cummerbund house, Mon, and Miranda from the SeeMs Detective Agency. Together they must unravel a web of family secrets before it is too late.
