The title, of course, refers to Manhattan island, and its alleged original purchase price by the Dutch from its native seasonal occupants. Stories of New York life by the writer and humorist Irvin S. Cobb. While Cobb was born in Paducah, Kentucky, and won national fame for his Judge Priest stories, he moved to New York in 1904 to work as a journalist.
