Cowboy jobs were hard to find so WesBarnes tried his hand at being a guard for an American-owned mine in Mexico, where he successfully thwarted a raid by driving off the thieves. But the mining company had wanted the raiders dead, or at least captured, so they brought in Jake Kenton to finish the job. A year later Barnes was surprised to cross paths with Kenton again. Coincidentally, both men had signed on with Captain Ryerson's newly formed Arizona Rangers. Barnes became a steady, thorough lawman, but Kenton quickly established a reputation as a ranger with bloodlust. Ryerson began to pair them on assignments, hoping Barnes's good judgment and fairness would prevail over Kenton's violent streak. Barnes hated being teamed with Kenton, but he had to admit his partner was a good man to have covering him when there was trouble. Kenton was as smart as he was merciless - if he were not a lawman, he would be one of the region's more crafty and dangerous outlaws.
