Jacket flap:
When a routine archeological exploration uncovers a surprising cave in a Scottish hillside, four children and three adults are plunged into mystery and legend.

The first hint of strangeness comes when Jennifer encounters an odd-looking boy while she is sketching one day, and when she tries to draw him later, the picture seems to have a peculiar life of its own. She and her brother, H.P., can make no sense of the message the boy has given her, but when the children help to uncover a bell of extraordinary beauty, caught underground in the roots of an old tree, the message takes on an eerie significance. Only when they have worked out the meaning of the bell's inscription, with the help of their friends Gillian and Hugh, do they realize they have discovered the cave where Arthur, King of Britain, sleeps with his companions until Britain shall have need of him again. Now the need is desperate, for ancient evil is abroad and reaching toward the Sleepers and the treasure they guard, as the children and their adult allies race to waken the Sleepers before it is too late.
