The coup has failed. The killing has not.

Berlin, April 1920. In a railway yard behind the Silesian Station, ten bodies have been dumped in the mud.

Nine are communist fighters killed in the violence surrounding the failed Kapp Putsch.

The tenth man is different.

He is dressed like a labourer, but his hands are soft. His underwear is expensive, with every identifying label carefully removed. He has been shot twice, once in the back and once in the head. And before the police can discover who he is, a senior officer orders the corpse cremated and the investigation closed.

Kriminalkommissar Dietz knows when someone wants a case buried. He turns to the one man stubborn enough to dig it back up: former intelligence officer and private investigator Alaric von Trelow.

Alaric's search for the identity of Body Number Ten leads from Berlin's railway yards, cabarets and criminal underworld to Freikorps veterans, army archives, political police and secret circles where the old Prussian codes of honour still rule.

Then a clue connects the dead man to someone from Alaric's past.

Now the investigation is personal.

Someone powerful is watching him. Someone is prepared to kill to keep the dead man's identity secret. And in a Germany still reeling from revolution, coup and civil war, the truth may prove more dangerous than murder.

To identify Body Number Ten, Alaric must uncover a conspiracy reaching into the army, the police and the highest levels of the new Republic, and decide what justice means when the state itself would rather look away.

Body Number Ten is the eighth Alaric von Trelow Mystery, a dark and atmospheric historical crime series set amid the danger, decadence and political turmoil of Weimar-era Germany.
