Ireland, 1849
At the height of the Great Famine, teenage brothers Josie and Hugh Lydon live with their parents, grandmother, and baby sister in a thatched cottage on the Devereux Estate. The country has been devastated, with millions dead or gone to North America and Australia. Villages are ravaged by disease, and bodies lie scattered on roadsides. To many, it feels like the end of the world.
By day, the boys scavenge for food among the empty fields and abandoned farmhouses. Proud and stubborn, their father tends the barren land, but when the crop fails, he is forced to go work on the new railway. As winter approaches, the family edges closer to starvation. All they can do is hope and pray he returns before then.
