Art's Story is the fourth and final book in the Coll and Art series - after Diving In, In the Deep End and Sink or Swim. It describes what happens when Coll comes back from Canada - whether the lovers get back together or not. I was very keen to write it in Art the boyfriend's voice; I think it's fascinating the way the same relationship can be such a different event for the boy. I loved creating Art's voice (so different to Coll's) and describing Coll through his eyes. Some of his harsh behaviour in the first three books is explained.
But when I sent the first 7000 words to my publishers they hated it: they said Art was too dark, too much of a threat to Coll. They wouldn't give me a contract to finish it. Later I posted those 7000 words on my website and I got lots of lovely emails telling me to finish it. So I did.
