Fix what’s broken. That’s the only rule Ross Warner knows.

An early-retired machinist living in Flint, Michigan, Ross fixes for free what his neighbors can’t afford to have fixed. Mowers. Bearings. Custom fabrications. Anything that rolls through his workshop doors. Keeping his hands moving keeps his head quiet. But then, two days of wind and lightning no forecast predicted rolls through the city, shearing structures down to bare concrete. No tornado. No hurricane. Ross survives in a creation of his own making—a steel vault he overbuilt beneath the basement stairs—and crawls out to silence.

What he finds in the wreckage changes everything. People who need him, people who can’t wait. A concrete slab and tools are all he has to work with, and clean water is the first thing running out. Survivors trickle in. Factions form. A group lives in the tunnels beneath a nearby technical institute. Someone’s keeping score, and not everyone in the city wants to be helped.

Ross is far from a leader, but somebody has to build a system to keep people alive, and nobody else is reaching for the reins.

Against What Comes is the first book in a gritty, character-driven post-apocalyptic series. If you like grounded survival stories with community building and hope, this is where it starts. Set in the As the Light Dies World.
