Joyce and Jed are walking hand-in-hand on the Dog Beach. Jed's being moody. He's hardly talked to her all day. It's getting late. The tide's advancing in. It's time to leave. Instead Jed chases kids away from a fire ring on the beach. He tells her to forget about him, throws her his car keys, and starts swimming out to sea. Joyce tries to follow.
