The Joe Coyote Mystery

(2009)
A novel by

The first Friday night after school starts in September Tess is holed up in her bedroom feeling glum. She's reading a horror novel and listening to a pesky coyote howl in the desert outside her window. When the phone rings, she perks up. It might be one of her old friends from L.A.! But it is only Joe Martinez, the Indian boy. He wants to be lab partners.

When the phone rings again, Tess thinks it's Joe being pesty. Instead it's a boy who calls her "California" and threatens to murder her if she doesn't go back to L.A. Tess thinks it's just some of the kids from school playing a prank on the new girl. Then the voice goes on to describe exactly what she's doing in her bedroom --- running the shower and scrawling a note to her parents to trace the call. Is he watching her?

Tess finds herself getting sucked into the strangest situation she has ever encountered in her life. She'd better keep her wits about her, or she's likely to end up dead.
