No sooner does Belle arrive in Red Rock, Montana than she finds a note taped to her door telling her to meet Les in Red Rock Canyon, just down the windy, twisty road out of town. She goes there at once and paces back and forth on the wooden footbridge over the rushing mountain torrent, waiting impatiently.

Something etched on the rock down by the streambed catches her eye. It is hard to see from here because of the intense red color of the stones lining the streambed. So she climbs down for a closer look. It turns out to be a carving of a stick figure man. It has a chain suspended from its neck. At the end dangles a red stone of an even more intense red color than the surrounding rock.

A sound explodes in her head. She crouches down, clutching onto a rock. Bullets ricochet off the boulder across the stream again and again.

What is going on? Belle had find out pretty soon, or they'll be carving her name on her tombstone next.
