July 1960. Since World War II's end in 1944, the world's two great power blocs--the American-dominated League of Democratic Nations and the Soviet-controlled Communist International, or Comintern--have faced off against each other, building up their arsenals and technologies for the final, apocalyptic conflict expected and dreaded by many. Much of this effort has gone to the "Space Race" in particular, with both superpowers putting astronauts in orbit by the early 1950s, building the first rudimentary space stations not long after, and preparing every day for the greatest achievement yet: setting foot on the Moon.

Now, after years of training and research, LASA (League Aeronautics and Space Administration) has launched Selene 10, the flight that will see League astronauts finally reach the lunar surface. Even as the mission begins, however, word arrives that the Soviets have launched a Moon flight as well, a feat not yet believed possible. Now, astronauts James Larson, Frank Lewis and Gus Grissom are truly in a race to the Moon--and will have to make radical decisions if their mission is to succeed...
