Because of his weak constitution, Peter Hale couldn't join the family business of fishing and crabbing in Baltimore, and he felt the calling to become a preacher anyway. When things make it so that he can no longer stay in Maryland, he decides to take a position in Southern Gulch, one with a stipulation to marry the former preacher's daughter.
