Author Commentary
The third and final book in my DeSai Trilogy is entitled 'Lucien's Reign,' and it tells the story of the culmination of Cyril DeSai and Rasia Engres in their son, Lucien. Ultimately, Lucien's existence has been the key all along; his mother Rasia and even his father Cyril were only mere pawns in the game the Powers are playing. This final installment chronicles his life until he finally comes into complete power at the age of eighteen.
At the very beginning of the book, Rasia is in the throes of labor. Now, to readers who are familiar with her character from reading the first two, she is a hard, dark woman with nothing but evil intent in her heart. Rasia is aware that her son is something of a 'chosen' one. He has a purpose set firmly in stone by the Powers, and the fact that he is the most horrific of breeds, a cross between a vampire and a witch, makes him dangerous from the beginning. The birth of Lucien Cerebus DeSai is nothing but a threat to Rasia, and this interferes with her affection. Because she is so hateful, it is a bit satisfying, in a sense, for her to be fearful of another, particularly her own child.
I wanted a certain level of normalcy and balance to remain in the world in this book, even though the majority of the population are vampires. The only way to accomplish this was through the mean-spirited Rasia; I had to play up her mothering instincts, and I had to make Cyril's family dream become her dream as well. Only in this way would she raise Lucien with the iron fist necessary for him to become an effective family head.
I should also mention the other signs of wickedness that Lucien displays in his life, though more often than not, are only visible to you, the reader. Rasia knows he is wicked, but she is unaware of all he really does; he is deceitful and conniving like no other child before him, and he hides his fun and games well. Writing 'Lucien's Reign' was a good time; I was able to really cut loose in a lot of areas regarding the true enormity of Lucien's evil character while attempting to help readers embrace any iota of humanity that he may possess. For those who have read this book, or the entire series, I do hope you had as much fun with these sick characters as I have.
