A family of four is selected to crew one of the Coalition’s new exploration starships.

Igor Wilder, captain, astrogator, engineer. When they’re on a planet, he’s also their geologist.

Kate Wilder, the team’s medical officer. Mother to eleven-year-old Danielle Wilder who is already showing an intense interest in xenobilology and Carol Wilder, sixteen, who is diligently learning everything Igor has to teach her.

Their small starship launches amid great fanfare as part of the Coalition’s Exploration and Expansion project. One of thirty teams dispersing in different directions throughout the sphere of planets controlled by the Coalition. In the wisdom of the Coalition they’re unarmed. With an expectation of encountering new alien races, it had been decided that it would be best if they didn’t appear to be aggressors. That was a mistake.

Less than half a year into their voyage, they wind up being pursued by pirates. Pirates who, according to Coalition wisdom, shouldn’t exist. Escaping, their damaged ship crashes into and then through a wormhole. A ‘feature’ Coalition science believes doesn’t exist.

They’re spit out of the wormhole elsewhere — in a severely damaged starship, themselves inexplicably changed, and lost in space.
