In this poignant love story set in the Appalachian Mountains near Asheville, North Carolina, Joe is a desperately lonely man who depends on the friendship of his peers at the Witmer Stone Retirement Home. When he falls in love with a much younger woman named Pattie, his spirit and life are renewed. Eventually, though, Pattie leaves him and the home to marry a younger man - a local TV weatherman - and start a family of her own, and so Joe invests himself into caring for his friends at the home as a way to ward off his heartache.
