This is a novella and Not a novel. It is a western romance set in the 1870 time frame in the area surrounding the fictional town of Cimmaron, Texas.
The closest known town to Cimmaron is San Antonio.

Trace Atkins was wounded at Gettysburg in the Civil War. When the war ended, he made his way back to the Rocking A ranch in Cimmaron, Texas and his beloved wife, Clara. She was not well and died 3 months after his return. The doctor in Cimmaron said she was worn out and died from the "wearies". Trace buried her beneath the cottonwood tree on a hill above cabin where they had lived.

Trace lived alone for two years and one Sunday, told the preacher he was really lonely. The preacher introduced him to Sarah Bartlett, whose husband had died at Gettysburg in the same battle in which Trace had been wounded.

From the first their relationship was magical and their romance bloomed on the frontier.
