(2026)(The ninth book in the Light Trilogy series)
A novel by Susan Leigh Carlton
The Man Tomorrow Lost
A Wind River Time-Travel Romance
Matthew Garrett has always been the practical one. His brother Cole is the adventurer, the man who can't resist finding out what's around the next corner. So when a mysterious white light appears before them one night in 2026, Matthew isn't surprised when Cole moves toward it.
He is surprised when he tries to pull his brother back and the light takes him instead.
Matthew awakens on the Wyoming prairie more than 150 years before he was born. Stranded outside the small frontier town of Wind River, he is certain of two things: the light took the wrong man, and somehow he has to find his way home.
Widow Anna Whitaker has built a good life for herself and her nine-year-old daughter, Lucy. Her boardinghouse is successful, her future is secure, and she has no need for the strangely dressed stranger who arrives in Wind River with an impossible story he quickly learns to keep to himself.
Lucy, however, is fascinated by him.
As Matthew struggles to survive in a world without electricity, automobiles, telephones, or any of the conveniences he once took for granted, Anna reluctantly helps him find a place in Wind River. Friendship slowly becomes something neither of them expected, and Matthew grows increasingly attached to the little girl who believes his incredible story when no one else does.
But Matthew has never stopped searching for the light.
His brother saw him disappear. His family is waiting for him in 2026, and Matthew knows Cole will spend the rest of his life wondering what happened that night.
Then the impossible happens.
The light returns.
For the first time since arriving in the past, Matthew can go home. All he has to do is step through.
On one side waits everything he has ever known.
On the other stand the woman and child he has come to love.
Matthew has spent months believing the light made a terrible mistake.
Now he must decide whether he was ever lost at all.
