Three Years Dead

(2015)
A novel by

When a good man . . . becomes a bad cop . . . but can't remember why.

Following an attempt on his life, Leeds-based detective Martin Money wakes from a week-long coma with no memory of the previous three years. He quickly learns that corrupt practices got him demoted, violence caused his wife to divorce him, and his vices and anger drove his friends away. On top of this, the West Yorkshire Police do not seem to care who tried to kill him, and he is offered a generous pay-out to retire.

But when a former junior detective offers him a career lifeline, Martin takes up the case of a missing prostitute, forcing him back into run-down estates awash with narcotics, violence, and sex . . . temptations he must resist if he is to resume his life as the good man he remembers himself to be.

To stay out of jail, to locate a vulnerable youngster, and to earn his redemption, Martin must to unravel his assault, and establish why everyone from his past appears to be lying at every turn.

Author A. D. Davies follows up his acclaimed page turner His First His Second with this gritty, fast paced crime thriller, charting the dark places a man will go to chase a past that nobody wants him to recall.

A note on content: this novel is set around some of the roughest areas the city of Leeds. The neighbourhoods' names are changed but they, and some of the characters, are (unfortunately) based on an amalgam of real places and people. This means the characters swear. A lot. Occasionally, the police do too. While A. D. Davies's other novels usually take it easy on language like the F-word, the characters in this British crime thriller do not. If you find this sort of language unacceptable, this book is not part of a wider series, so it might be advisable to skip this one (sorry). There are also depictions of violence, sex, and drug use.
