Fitting In

(2022)
(The first book in the Sun and Shadows series)
A novel by

For ten years, I lived locked in three rooms by my mother. Mirrors on every surface. Lights on. Constantly.

Ten years of that.

Until one day, without notice, everything changed.

My mom’s gone. My father, the man I’d been told was dead back when my life first went to hell, is now responsible for me.

All because my mom is a celestial. That magical race of women from a plan of light. They come here to get pregnant, have a daughter, and then return to continue the cycle. That would be me. I should be a celestial.

Except I’m not.

I’m bald and magicless, although I should be growing hair and getting magic.

And yet none of that helps me with this new life of mine. Fitting in. Mixing with the rest of the magical kids at the academy.

I stand out in a crowd, and you can bet the bullies pick up on that.

Can I do this? Can I make it through? If it were normal bullies, I’d say yes. It’s just that the world of magic isn’t the normal world, which means things can take a sudden and drastic turn for the worst without notice.

It’s up to me to make it through this. Mom put everything into raising me, then had to leave me behind.

My name is Sonni, and this is my life. I’m an almost 16-year-old girl without magic or a mom, and it’s up to me to make this work. Let’s up I’m up for the challenge.
