Tarn Arisfal and his team of misfits have done the impossible. Still-bombs from the Progenitors rain from the sky, dropping deadly monsters upon an unprepared people. The land itself is now fractured and leaderless, and each day the annual orc invasion grows closer. As the killer of the Arch Mage and hero of the Realm, all eyes turn to Tarn to find a solution, whether he likes it or not.
When an assassination attempt sends him back into the Sword Dungeon to search for a route to distant Ak-Thanon, Tarn must run one deadly gauntlet after another, all the while being chased by a team of renegade gem-users whose power and abilities mirror his own.
Only in the jungles of the orcs can Tarn find what he needs to bring peace to both the Realm and himself. But each move comes with a cost in blood, and if Tarn can’t pay the price – neither he nor his team will survive the next turn.
