A lynch-minded posse is hot on the trail of the outlaw Jack Crow who discovers the body of a Texas Ranger new to the area. In order to shake off his pursuers, Jack decides to swap his identity and must wear the distinctive boots of the dead man if his deception is to succeed. Jack becomes accepted as a ranger and finds himself upholding the law from which he has so often run. This means siding with homesteaders and Mexicans against the mighty Lazy Creek ranch and a gang of gun-runners. A bloody range war ensues, and to protect his new friends Jack is forced to seek a final showdown with the notorious renegade gang leader. As Jack discovers, a dead man's boots are much harder to take off than put on...
