Women adored him, men liked him, the Queen was in love with him, but the members of the Old Nobility hated him and politicians distrusted him, seeing him as the over-favored upstart son of a traitorous father. Lord Robert Dudley, created Earl of Leicester, impetuous, courageous and handsome, possessed all his father's ambition but none of his political guile. He was to be suspected of murdering his wife, the scandal almost implicating the Queen. She persistently refused to marry him after this, but he never lost her love. Yet none of his dearest hopes were realized and he died lonely and disillusioned.
