(1982)
A novel by

Part One Of Two Parts The Lombard family--tight-knit, wealthy, conservative--finds its loyalties split when massacre, terrorism and torture cripple their beloved Algeria. Colonialism is dead--so are a lot of colonials. Jean-Claude, the eldest son, is a brooding introvert, viciously anti-Arab. Emile, passionately liberal, marries an Arab girl and joins the rebels. Paule, their lovely young sister, breaks down under the butchery, while Robert, the soldier, fails his own personal loyalty test. As the terror grows, members of the family take different sides in a fratricidal struggle that can be resolved only by the death of one brother.
