A Story by

Maddie "Sunny" Byrne came home to Loon Lake with a failed marriage, an empty savings account, and no idea what to do next. Two years later she's the Activities Director at Camp Do-Over, an adult summer camp where grown-ups pay real money to sleep in bunk beds, make lanyards, and be called by nicknames for a week. She rings the bell at six, keeps two hundred people fed and happy on nothing but a clipboard and a good memory, and shares her porch steps with an eighty-pound camp mutt named S'more who can smell a marshmallow through a closed door. It's not the life she planned. It's the one that fits — right down to Roz in the Chow Hall hollering about bug juice, Winnie and her tote-bag mottos, and a county sheriff who says about nine words a day and means all of them.

Then six old college friends check in for a reunion twenty years in the making, and by dawn the charming one at the center of the group is dead by a cold fire pit. It looks like a bad end to a long night — until Sunny notices the small, wrong, tidy things nobody else does: two roasting sticks and only one mug. A lantern switched off and stood neatly upright. A campfire somebody doused on the way out. When the county starts circling Roz, the woman who makes the muffins and would go off the dock for her, Sunny stops being the Activities Director and starts being something else entirely. Because six people came up that gravel drive carrying twenty years of grudges in their luggage, and every last one of them is smiling.
