Jack’s assignment: find one lost hiker in the Big Bend, twelve hundred square miles of desert wilderness. Wilderness maybe, but Jack grew up in this Chihuahuan desert. Old home week. Things get complicated in a hurry, of course. Does he find his hiker? Eventually. Meanwhile, Ev investigates an anomaly in her boss’s financial portfolio, and that’s understating it. Teaming with the NPS director, Jack and all find a quite sophisticated smuggling ring. An Office of Personnel Management director sets out to find financial malfeasance in the park. She’s sure it’s there. Ev and Jack know there’s smuggling, but who is the boss of the operation? The irritating OPM chick is appropriately humbled, as the reader cheers. The smuggling ring is exposed, finally. Jack and Ev prevail, but it''s emotionally wrenching for all.
