The Last Campaign

(2000)
A novel by

Wyn Trainam isn't sure he knows how to soldier anymore. The former Medal of Honor winner in the Civil War requests a transfer to the Tenth Cavalry, the Buffalo soldiers, stationed in Texas and about to get into the fight of their career against the Apache, Victorio, and his men. Ft. Concho holds more for Wyn than a chance to re-discover himself--the slave he freed before the War, as well as the woman he loved and left with he joined the Union in 1861, are, unknown to him, settled on a small ranch outside town, where they break horses for the army. Mara, now a widow, is raising her son with the help of Wyn's ex-slave, and has changed from the delicate girl he knew into a woman of grit and determination who has no use for him now.

The Tenth's campaign to catch Victorio is a story of professionalism, determination, and men with the worst horses and equipment in the U. S. Cavalry who will let nothing stop them from doing their job. Wyn learns what he needs to know about a man who thought life had passed him by, and about the courage it takes to admit a mistake and go forward from that point on. His pride in the Buffalo soldiers grows along with his strength as both a soldier and as a man trying to convince a woman that she needs him.
