Murder in Empire Mine
(2025)(A book in the Rebecca Hartwell Cozy Mystery series)
A novel by Dee Dee Edwards
A remote retreat. A murdered principal. And a schoolteacher who never expected to become the detective.
When reserved teacher and aspiring mystery writer Rebecca Hartwell arrives at Empire Mine for a weekend of awkward icebreakers, murder is the last thing on her mind.
But when the unpopular Principal Barton turns up dead during a tense team-building exercise—where Rebecca is his teammate—everything changes. Trapped by a mudslide with quirky colleagues and a growing list of suspects, Rebecca—alongside her loyal dog, Gatsby—quietly starts sleuthing.
Clues emerge: a lost cufflink, forged records, and a suspicious aide hiding in plain sight. Suspicion falls on Janet, recently disciplined by Barton behind closed doors, and Logan, the retreat’s maintenance lead, who’d clashed with Barton over safety concerns days earlier.
As danger escalates—with gas leaks, midnight break-ins, and growing tension—Rebecca realizes trusting her instincts, and her team, may be the only way out.
