Midshipman Rory Kinghorn’s career in the Royal Navy starts in 1795 in the thick of the Battle of Genoa where he witnesses the terrible pounding by the French fleet of his ship HMS Illustrious.
His next challenge is to face a promotions board in Gibraltar as he takes his Lieutenant’s Examination before joining HMS Arab, bound for the West Indies Station. With Spain now declaring war on Britain, his ship faces a new enemy in the Caribbean as well as France and Holland and the threat of the autumn hurricanes.
