(The eighth book in the Alf Rosher series)

She was outwardly prim, she was plain, and she was very excited. The man, such a tall handsome man, had asked her to meet him. She didn't think he would actually come. But he did. Not long afterwards, she was dead. Detective Inspector Rosher was one of the men who was summoned to the roped-off section of the dell where her body had been found. His initial problem had been to establish her identify. It hadn't been too difficult. She was "only Evie," as the cook-housekeeper for Sir Roland Goy explained. But there's money in that old house of his, and gold and old masters - what stuff there must be in there. The cook-housekeeper wasn't much help otherwise, nor was the gardener - certainly not at first. And Rosher had his own troubles on the side - with a jealous husband, and a confrere at that. He didn't need extra troubles - not just at that time. Readers who have come to know Rosher will be happy (in spite of themselves) to have him back - working away in his own fashion on some very puzzling problems. Readers who haven't met Rosher yet - well, he's a fair treat, he is. Book Dust Jacket
